Clonazepam belongs to the benzodiazepine family like diazepam, alprazolam, lorazepam, flurazepam, and others. It acts by enhancing the effect of a neurotransmitter that reduces brain activity. Excessive brain activity can produce anxiety which may lead to psychiatric disorders.
Indications:
Clonazepam is used to relieve symptoms of anxiety and types of seizures specifically petit mal seizures, akinetic seizures, myoclonus, and Lennox-Gastaut disease. This drug can be used together with other drugs to reduce seizure occurrence. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.
How to take:
Take Clonazepam as directed by the doctor. This drug is taken by mouth with or without food however to reduce gastric irritation, it is best taken with food. With a full glass of water, take this tablet as a whole. If this drug is for the prevention of seizure continue to take it even with the absence of seizure. It is important to keep a constant level of Clonazepam in the body. Whenever a dose is missed, take one as soon as possible. Do not take more doses than prescribed by the doctor. If you miss a dose of Rivotril and you are taking it regularly, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your health care provider. Do not take 2 doses at once. Precautions:
Clonazepam should be used with caution as it may cause drowsiness, dizziness, lightheadedness or difficulty in coordination. If this drug is taken with alcoholic beverages then these effects may become worse and life-threatening. Clonazepam is not used in children less than 18 years old since studies have not proven it safe and effective. Do not use Clonazepam in pregnant and lactating women since this drug is excreted in breastmilk. If this drug is use in prolonged periods it is known to develop tolerance and dependence therefore consult doctor.
